Phragmites REMOVAL Work Party

July 27 @ 10:00 am

From the BVBTC Biodiversity team:

“Canada’s worst invasive” plant found on local BTC land — please join a Phragmites work party!

Our Club’s eagle-eyed volunteers have spotted phragmites in six local areas under BTC protection! Phragmites grows very quickly on land and in the water and poisons its local environment as it goes.  You may recall an infestation a few years back in the Collingwood area which local folks successfully eradicated over a period of a few years.

Well, now our Club is looking at the same process. Please join our Biodiversity team volunteers and Conservation Ambassadors, Esme Campbell and Kayla Jakobszen, in removing a Phragmites infestation right near the beaver pond at Young Wetlands. We will use spades to dig out the plant and bag it for later destruction. You will need to have sturdy footwear and a spade.

More work parties will be necessary through August, including ones where we will use the second technique needed with Phragmites — cutting off plant stalks underwater in order to deprive the roots of oxygen.

SIGN UP FOR THIS OR OTHER PHRAGMITES REMOVAL EVENTS USING THE FORM BELOW!

LOCATION: Park and meet on Sideroad 19, west of Grey Rd 7 in Epping. (https://maps.app.goo.gl/VyfRNePasukjWvwY8)
