When the leaves change from green to red to brown, we are reminded that hunting season is upon us in the Beaver Valley.
Deer hunting occurs in the Beaver Valley throughout the fall months. Warnings to Bruce Trail hikers are mainly issued during deer rifle hunting season. However, hikers should be aware that deer hunting with guns and bows and other types of hunting (such as wild turkey) may be occurring at other times.
Some dates to note for 2024 are:
- Wild Turkey, Shotgun/Bow, October 15-27
- Wild Turkey, Bow, October 1-31
- Deer, Rifles/Shotgun/Bow, November 4-10
- Deer, Muzzle-loading guns/Bow, November 18-24 & December 2-8
- Deer, Bow, various dates from October 1 – December 31

Public land, including almost all Grey County Forests, is open to hunters. While not an exhaustive list, popular hikes in the Beaver Valley that are affected include: Grey County forest south of Rocklyn (e.g. Sligo Side Trail) and Len Gertler Memorial Loree Forest (e.g. main trail, Len Gertler Side Trail). Additionally, a section of Main Trail that runs through private property west of Metcalfe Rock is closed annually at the request of the landowner from November 4 to 10 and from December 2 to 8 for hunting season.
