Important Notes

  1. All km mentioned are according to maps in edition 25 of the Bruce Trail Reference.
  2. Hike participants are expected to wear sturdy footwear.
  3. Each potluck participant is asked to bring his own dishes, cutlery, glass and drink of choice. Each participant is to bring a main dish, or a salad or dessert for at least 6 servings. The hosts will provide predinner snacks as well as tea and coffee.
  4. When weather is doubtful please contact the hike leader to make sure the outing has not been cancelled or rescheduled.
  5. For the Nov. and Dec. hikes please register with the leader in order to be notified if the event is cancelled due to the weather conditions.

Hunting Season Precautions

Hunting with a rifle in the Blue Mountains, Beaver Valley, Owen Sound/Meaford area occurs between Nov. 2 and Nov. 7, 2009. The Beaver Valley Bruce Trail Club has no rural hikes planned for that time. For further information go to the MNR website: www.mnr.gov.on.ca.

T=Moderate   S=Leisurely

Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Old Baldy parking lot (km 42.6) for a 2-hour outing to learn techniques for taking nature photographs.  Bring your camera, accessories and tripod if available and a plastic bag for kneeling on the ground. .  Leader: Doug Galloway 519-599-2288.

Meet at 1:30 p.m. at Black Bank where the trail crosses Dufferin Road 21 at km 47.1   for an 8.2 km hike.  Some steep hills. Leader: Sandy Tulloch 519-599-7919.

Sun. Oct 4 Bruce Trail Day Hogg’s Falls Map 26

Come and bring a friend to enjoy the Bruce Trail. Families especially welcome. Meet at the parking lot on the Lower Valley Road. Short 1.8 km loop hikes start at 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. Longer 4.8 km loop starts at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments and prizes. For more details call Christine Blake 705-446-9592.

Meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Beaver Valley Lookout (on Grey Rd. 13, south of Kimberley) for a 9 km hike taking in the new reroute north of Old Baldy. Leader: Joëlle Martin 519-538-5766.

Oct. 14: Meet at 10:00 a.m. at km 0.0 map 19 (roadside parking on the 3rd Line, E.H.S. 30 m south of County Road 8) for a 16 km hike.

Oct. 15: Meet at 10:00 a.m. at km 54 map 18 where the trail crosses 5th Line EHS (access from the 5th Sideroad) for a 16 km hike.  Please pre-register for one or both hikes with leader: Sandy Tulloch 519-599-7919. B&B information will be available.

Sun. Oct. 18 Blueberry Trails, Wasaga Nordic

T=Moderate S=Moderate

Meet 2:00 p.m. at Wasaga Nordic (take Hwy. #26 east to Mosley St., continue east on River Rd. West, turn right at OPP Station. Parking lot is on the left) for an 8 km hike on the ski trails. Dinner to follow at a local restaurant. Leader: Carolyn Moerschner 705-445-0267.

T=Moderate S=Moderate

Meet at 2 p.m. at the Loree Schoolhouse # 729005 21st S.R. east of Victoria Corners for a 2.5 hr. hike.  Potluck to follow at the Schoolhouse hosted by Sandy & Al Tulloch, 519-599- 7919.  Bring a costume!!  (at least one item - funny glasses, hat, socks, etc.)  Leader: John McCullam  519-599-5351.

Sun. Nov. 8  Eugenia Falls to Hogg's Falls Map 26

T=Strenuous  S=Moderate

Meet at 1:00 p.m. at Hogg's Falls parking lot on the Lower Valley Road to carpool to Eugenia Falls for a 6.5 km hike.  Some steep hills and 2 streams to ford.  Register with leader: Harry Stevens at harrystevens@live.ca.

Tues. Nov. 10  Talisman to Epping Map 27

T=Strenuous   S=Moderate

Meet at 10 a.m. at Epping Lookout on County Rd. 7 to carpool to km 80.4 for a 11.5 km hike.  Bring lunch.  Register with leader: Judy Galloway 519-599-2288.

T=Easy  S=Leisurely

Meet 10:00 a.m. at S/E end of Metro Parking lot (formerly A&P) in Collingwood for a 1 1/2 to 2 hr. hike (weather dependent) on local trail system. Register with leader: Christine Blake 705-446-9592.

T=Moderate S=Moderate

Meet at 1:30 p.m. for an 8 km loop hike on the Bruce Trail and Kolapore Ski trails. Register with leader: Gary Norton 519-599-5297.

Wed. Dec. 2 Festival of Lights Walk

Meet at 5:30 p.m. at Harrison Park Inn for an easy walking tour of the Christmas Lights.  Dinner out to follow.  Please pre-register for dinner by NOV. 14.  Leader: Sandy Tulloch  519-599-7919.

Thurs. Dec. 10 Massie Map 29

Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Big Apple in Meaford to convoy to the Massie area for a weather dependent 2-hour outing. Optional lunch afterwards. Register with leader: Mike Osborn 519-538-1866.

Rating System

Terrain (T): Easy: mostly flat and good footing
Moderate: Some hills and/or some poor footing
Strenuous: Hilly with steep climbs and some poor footing

Speed (S): Leisurely=2 to 3 km/hr, Moderate=3 to 4 km/hr, Fast=5 km/hr or over

Important Please register for activities and potlucks with the leader at least one day before activity.

Trail user's code

  • Hike only along marked routes, especially on farmland.
  • Do not take shortcuts.
  • Do not climb fences - use the stiles.
  • Respect the privacy of people living along the Trail.
  • Leave the Trail cleaner than you found it.
  • Carry out all litter.
  • No open fires are allowed on the Trail - use a portable stove.
  • Leave flowers and plants for others to enjoy.
  • Do not damage live trees or stip off bark.
  • Keep dogs on a leash and under control at all times.
  • Protect and do not disturb wildlife.
  • Leave only your thanks, and take nothing but photographs.

Essential Gear for Day Hikes

1. Daypack or Fanny Pack: to carry the folllowing:
  • 2 litres of water minimum, in a Nalgene bottle
  • food (snacks an d lunch).
  • closed cell foam square for sitting on
  • Fox 40 whistle
  • small first aid/blister kit
  • kleenex/toilet paper
  • medium zip lock bag for garbage
  • plastic bags (grocery) for muddy boots
  • disposable rain poncho
  • spare set of car keys
  • identification and health card
  • money
  • trail maps & road maps for area of hike
  • protective pack rain cover
2. Water proofed hiking boots
3. 2-pair sock system (liner sock + hiking sock, prevents blisters (no cotton!)
4. Sun screen and insect repellent (seasonal)
5. Jacket with hood (seasonal)
6. Your favourite hiking clothes - no cotton
7. Hiking stick(s)
8. Gaiters (ankle or knee high) (seasonal)
9. Umbrella (seasonal - rain or sun protection)
10. Hat (seasonal)

Note: all items that are not weatherproof should be stored separately in zip-lock bags to keep them protected.
