Important Notes

  1. All km mentioned are according to maps in edition 25 of the Bruce Trail Reference.
  2. Hike participants are expected to wear sturdy footwear.
  3. Always carry I.D. and your health card.
  4. When weather is doubtful please contact the hike leader to make sure the outing has not been cancelled or rescheduled.
  5. Each potluck participant is asked to bring his own dishes, cutlery, glass and drink of choice. Each participant is to bring a main dish, or a salad or dessert for at least 6 servings. The hosts will provide predinner snacks as well as tea and coffee.
  6. PLEASE REGISTER FOR ACTIVITIES AND POTLUCKS WITH THE LEADER AT LEAST ONE DAY BEFORE ACTIVITY.
  7. WINTER ADVISORY: ACTIVITIES AND POTLUCKS MAY BE CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER.

Two Badges opportunity

Complete the Beaver Valley section in 4 hikes: 2 in June, 2 in September plus either the Falling Water Trail in 3 days on consecutive Wednesday in June or 1 day on Sept. 4 and receive the Apple badge and one of the Falling Water badges. See schedule. Fall hikes: Sept 14 & 15.

Meet 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot behind the Big Apple in Meaford to convoy to km. 141.6 (Kemble Rock Rd.) for a 9 km linear hike. Bring lunch. At the end of the hike, after ice cream at the Big Bay General Store, we plan to attend "Art in the Garden show" at Keppelcroft Farm. (Fee charged). Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the "Craigleith Depot" parking lot (junction of Hwy. 26 and Grey Rd. 19) to convoy to trail head for a short but challenging hike on a side trail to the top and then enjoy a free gondola ride back down. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Big Apple parking lot in Meaford to convoy to the start of our hike. We will explore 2 side trails north of Hwy 26 for a total of 5.2 kms. Leader: Joëlle Martin 519-538-5766.

SAT. AUG. 28 Talisman to Bowles Hill Map 26

T=Moderate S=Moderate

Meet at 9:30 a.m. at parking on south side of Bowles Hill (km 73.8) to car pool to km 80.4 for a 2-hour hike. Leader: Doug Galloway 519-599-2288.

Rating System

Terrain (T): Easy: mostly flat and good footing
Moderate: Some hills and/or some poor footing
Strenuous: Hilly with steep climbs and some poor footing

Speed (S): Leisurely=2 to 3 km/hr, Moderate=3 to 4 km/hr, Fast=5 km/hr or over

Important Please register for activities and potlucks with the leader at least one day before activity.

Trail user's code

  • Hike only along marked routes, especially on farmland.
  • Do not take shortcuts.
  • Do not climb fences - use the stiles.
  • Respect the privacy of people living along the Trail.
  • Leave the Trail cleaner than you found it.
  • Carry out all litter.
  • No open fires are allowed on the Trail - use a portable stove.
  • Leave flowers and plants for others to enjoy.
  • Do not damage live trees or stip off bark.
  • Keep dogs on a leash and under control at all times.
  • Protect and do not disturb wildlife.
  • Leave only your thanks, and take nothing but photographs.

Essential Gear for Day Hikes

1. Daypack or Fanny Pack: to carry the folllowing:
  • 2 litres of water minimum
  • food (snacks an d lunch).
  • closed cell foam square for sitting on
  • Fox 40 whistle
  • small first aid/blister kit
  • kleenex/toilet paper
  • medium zip lock bag for garbage
  • plastic bags (grocery) for muddy boots
  • disposable rain poncho
  • spare set of car keys
  • identification and health card
  • money
  • trail maps & road maps for area of hike
  • protective pack rain cover
2. Water proofed hiking boots
3. 2-pair sock system (liner sock + hiking sock, prevents blisters (no cotton!)
4. Sun screen and insect repellent (seasonal)
5. Jacket with hood (seasonal)
6. Your favourite hiking clothes - no cotton
7. Hiking stick(s)
8. Gaiters (ankle or knee high) (seasonal)
9. Umbrella (seasonal - rain or sun protection)
10. Hat (seasonal)

Note: all items that are not weatherproof should be stored separately in zip-lock bags to keep them protected.
